CBD AND PREGNANCY: WHAT DOES RESEARCH SAY?

CBD AND PREGNANCY: WHAT DOES RESEARCH SAY?

Many pregnant women are searching for a way to ease nausea, pain and inflammation during pregnancy, without unwanted side effects. The problem is, there are currently no human studies to prove the efficacy of CBD during pregnancy, only reports of relief.

One study performed on women from Jamaica showed that high cannabinoid consumption in pregnant mothers produced better test results in children measured at 3 months old. The study concluded that although test scores were better in children of heavy cannabinoid users, there was likely a social and cultural component at play, rather than the effects of cannabinoids use during pregnancy. However, it was concluded that there were no negative side effects for mothers who used cannabinoids during pregnancy.

If you are debating whether or not to use cannabinoids during pregnancy, speak to your licensed healthcare professional. They will be able to guide you to making the smartest decision for you and your family.

CBD as a Muscle Relaxant

There is a study published in the Journal of Reproduction that utilized synthetic CBD on cells outside the human body to look at their role in managing contractions. The research, completed in 2010, concluded that CBD helps with oxytocin-induced uterine contractions. While this is not a human study, or even a solid case study, this study is paving the way for future studies on human subjects.

Current CBD Research

When it comes to research on CBD in pregnancy, there just aren’t any studies out there. The majority of scientific studies on pregnancy and cannabinoids look at the effects of THC, rather than its non-psychoactive counterpart CBD.

There was an experiment done on pregnant mice that showed CBD did not have any negative effects on pregnancy, as opposed to THC which created an increased risk for miscarriage or poor implantation of the mouse fetus. It is unclear whether these results would consistently reproduce in a human population.
